Our Babies, Their Babies!

Like father, like son!!!! It's said that when we have kids of our own, we get what our parents had, US!! Temperaments, personalities, the whole bundle of wax!! Well, Mitch, my son, and his son Alex, are a perfect example of this! Alex's teacher says he figgets too much, talks out of turn, and on and on. Mitch told the teacher he really didn't think they would ever be able to curb this behavior, since that's what his mother had heard about him and he never stopped.
Well, let me tell you, that's not all I heard. I was told, when he's bored, he talks to the stuffed owl in the back of the room. I told them I really saw no problem with that, UNLESS, the owl talked back!! (Not a teacher's favorite parent here!!)

Ahhhhhh, children, such a blessing!!!! And they are, I'm not only amazed mine made it to adulthood, but I'm amazed I survived!! At one point, I had 5 teens, YES I SAID 5 TEENS, 13 to 19 years old.
Oh man, those were the days!! I truly miss those days, but I truly am glad they are over (with fond memories, of course)
With my 5 kids and my honey's 3, come 21, yes, 21 grandbabies, ages 6 months up to 15 years.
Everyone a blessing!!
Below is a meal that can be made for the masses!! LOL This Italian family loves it and loves to eat!!

Lasagna
1 lb. ground beef
1 egg, beaten
2-1/2 cups Mozzarella Cheese, divided
1 container (15 oz.) Ricotta Cheese
1/2 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese, divided
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
1 jar (26 oz.) spaghetti sauce (or your own home made sauce)
12 lasagna noodles, uncooked

HEAT oven to 350°F. Brown meat in large skillet on medium-high heat. Meanwhile, mix egg, 1-1/4 cups mozzarella cheese, the ricotta cheese, 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese and the parsley until well blended; set aside.
DRAIN meat; return to skillet. Stir in spaghetti sauce. Add to meat mixture; stir until well blended. Spread 1 cup of the sauce onto bottom of 13x9-inch baking dish; top with layers of 3 lasagna noodles, 1/3 of the ricotta cheese mixture and 1 cup sauce. Repeat layers twice. Top with remaining 3 noodles and the remaining meat sauce. Sprinkle with remaining 1-1/4 cups mozzarella cheese and remaining 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese. Cover with greased foil.
BAKE 45 min. Remove foil; bake an additional 15 min. or until heated through. Let stand 15 min. before cutting to serve.

Small Businesses In Our Family I

Kathy Borsa
Portrait Photographer
Sunburst Creative Expressions

sunburst5651@yahoo.com
Above are some of her works! My nieces Alysia and Jayme. Their mother's best subjects!! (the little hams, love the camera!!) The baby is her granddaughter, Hailey!!

Our family has diverse talents! We have auto/RV painters, plumbers, cabinetry makers, firemen, dog sitters, nurses, photographers, maintenance men, radio DJ's, policeman, artisans and many more!
Sis-n-law, Kathy is starting a photography business. She does beautiful work. Family, seniors, engagement, pets, school, nature, sports, weddings and more. I've listed her info if interested in contacting her. She's reasonably priced and does great work!
Wedding coverage: $500 for up to 4 hours of photography and the pictures on a CD. Additional coverage is $50 an hour.
Sr. pics; $50 up to 2 hours and edited photos on CD. Multiple poses and changes of clothes.
Children or family pictures. $30 for a disk and 1 hour. Children can change clothes. Multiple images.
Collages are $30.
Print charges are additional.

It's bonfire time!!!! The family already has had some mores, but here is a great idea!! PIE IRONS! A Pie Iron is a mold of cast iron or aluminum, with handles. Each side also serves as a small skillet. Bread is placed in first and then the filling into the generous cooking cavity. The two sides close and are then placed over hot coals.
You can make anything from apple/cherry pies, pizza, peanut butter and chocolate, reuben's, to sausage and eggs. Here is a basic idea on how to make them:

Bread
Can of Favorite Pie Filling
Directions:Butter a slice of bread and lay it butter side down on the iron. Open the pie filling and spoon some on the bread (not so much that it squirts out though!) Place another slice of bread on top, butter side up and close the pie iron. Place in coals of fire for a few minutes on each side, checking to make sure it doesn't burn.

Along with bonfires comes mosquitoes. We have been bombarded by mosquitoes this last week. You can't even walk across the yard without getting bit half a dozen times. We do have the answer though!!!! Bye Bye Bugz Goat milk Soap, our all natural bug repellent. I was out this morning and they were buzzing all over the dogs. I took a bar of this soap and rubbed it on their coat. It can be rubbed on tent screens, regular screens, etc. to keep this little pests away. It's pleasantly scented and works!!

October 1, 2008 Wednesday HAPPY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!!!!!!! Started making Handmade goat Milk soaps one year ago, today!!

Ducks, Ducks, Ducks!!

Daughter, Jennifer, her daughter holding one of her "fur babies", "fur babies", and our "Ducks in a Cup"
As you might have already guessed, our family is into nature! The baby ducks, above, were rescued by daughter Jennifer from neighborhood children. The mother duck, after the children were done with her, was not to be found anywhere. Jennifer took the babies, fed them, kept them clean, went to the library to look up how to take care of them, bought special food for them. She was their mama!! When they were big enough, she took them to the park, to let them go their own way and be free. She couldn't get away from them!!! They chased her back to the car, and left her with no other choice but to take them back home. Like I said, she was their MAMA!!!
The picture, next to the baby ducks, are our baby ducks!!! LOL DUCKS IN A CUP!!! Named so by Julissa, when asked what shall we name these, said "ducks in a cup, duh!!"

Well, alrighty then, so they are!! We scent them with baby powder fragrance oils. Again, thinking the kids would love it, but everyone loves the scent and the DUCKS!!

Here is a recipe for Biscotti. Who doesn't love Biscotti??!! I made it this afternoon for my honey.

A Master recipe for biscotti
2 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 cup sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup almonds (slivered, sliced, or whole)

2 large eggs at room temperature

4 tablespoons melted butter

2 teaspoons anise extract or pure anise flavoring,

OR 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (I use almond flavoring)

put a rack to the center position and heat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with wax or parchment paper. Place the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and nuts in a large bowl and stir to combine. In a small bowl, combine the eggs, butter and anise or vanilla and whisk to fully combine. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the egg mixture. Using a rubber spatula, mix to combine until a rough dough forms.
2. Dump the dough onto a work surface and knead a couple of times or until the dough comes together, adding extra flour sparingly and only if necessary. Start to form the dough into a big, fat cigar and cut it in half. Form each half into a cigar about 1 inch thick, 2 inches wide and about 12 inches long. Place them onto the cookie sheet and lightly press with your fingers to slightly flatten the cigars.
3. Bake for 25 minutes reversing the pan halfway through. The bars (cigars) will be firm to the touch and just slightly browned. Remove from the oven and lower the temperature to 300 degrees. Let the cookies cool on the cookie sheet for 15 minutes.
4. Remove cookies to a cutting board using two spatulas. Using a serrated knife, slice the bars on an angle about 1/2 inch thick to form the biscotti. Lay them back on the cookie sheet with either cut side down and place back in the oven for 15 minutes. Turn each cookie to expose the other cut side and place back in the oven for another 15 minutes. The cookies will take on the slightest bit of color and feel firm and dry. Let cool on a rack to room temperature. Store in an airtight container.
Makes about 3 dozen small cookies.

And More Ponds!!

Top left, brother Pat's pond.
Top right, Grandkids, Matthew, 14, Kalista, 7, and Alex, 8.
Kalista and Alex

Large or small, our family loves ponds. Pat's pond has his home built pontoon, drink holder and all!!!! (See what people will do when bored!!??) The smaller "pond" is daughter Jennifer's new project. Her children have all helped in digging the pond. When she gets it to the shape and depth she wants, the next step is to put in the liner. We use old pool liners, rubber roofing, or you can buy rubber made just for ponds. After the liner is in place you start arranging rocks, and more rocks and even more rocks!! This is the fun part, mainly because you can make it very fancy with a waterfall or just a nicely landscaped water garden. As it progresses, more pictures from start to finish will be documented!!

Matthew came up with the name of our "Sandy Sandals"soap. He was a great help making our first batch of Sandy Sandals. We scented this with baby powder fragrance oils. We put the soap in molds and placed the sandal, which has a ribbon on it, we put oatmeal on some and cornmeal on others, and then he came up with the name. These are great gifts for your children to give out at parties, or birthday gifts, or just keep for yourself!!!!

This soap, with the ribbon, can be used as you would soap on a rope!! So cute!

Here is a great recipe for an after school snack!

Sunny Peanut Butter Chews
Your kids will love this 4-ingredient treat that goes together in minutes. Stovetop or microwave, you choose!
Prep Time:20 min
Start to Finish:50 min
Makes:18 bars
1/3 cup creamy peanut butter
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 bag (10 oz) marshmallows
5 cups Golden Grahams® cereal
1.
Grease bottom and sides of 9-inch square pan with shortening, or spray with cooking spray.
2.
In 3-quart saucepan, heat peanut butter, butter and marshmallows, stirring constantly, until melted; remove from heat. Gently stir in cereal, 1 cup at a time, until evenly coated.
3.
Press mixture evenly in pan with buttered spatula. Cool completely, about 30 minutes. For bars, cut into 6 rows by 3 rows.
Microwave Directions: Grease bottom and sides of 9-inch square pan with shortening, or spray with cooking spray. In 3-quart microwavable bowl, microwave peanut butter, butter, and marshmallows uncovered on High 1 minute; stir. Microwave 30 seconds longer or until mixture can be stirred smooth. Gently stir in cereal, 1 cup at a time, until evenly coated. Press mixture evenly in pan with buttered spatula. Cool completely, about 30 minutes. For bars, cut into 6 rows by 3 rows.

Family Projects-Ponds

Here's another one of our projects, our ponds! We just love our ponds. We started out with a one big hole, and went from there. My honey had me lay out a shape, and he started to dig. and dig, and dig, and dig some more. The one shown is our second pond(water garden). After checking around and seeing the prices of bridges, Paul decided to build one himself with scrap wood, $800-$1200 vs. free, sure can't beat that!! We bought feeder gold fish and a few koi. Our ponds have gone thru cycles with the fish spawning, having lots of babies, babies growing and then the older ones dying off. (So sad, Sally, Bubbles, Ghost, White Lightning, sure do miss them) We've also had herons land and those piggies can eat tons of fish in a very, very short time. We now keep a mesh on the pond so the herons cannot get to the fish. Everyone that comes, young and old, feeds the fish, tries to catch the frogs, and tries to find the tiny baby fish. These ponds can be a great family project. Our daughter Jennifer is starting a pond, as it progresses and we get more pictures, we will put it all together on the blog, step by step!

I'm going to make bread dough today. Usually make pizza and with the same dough make cinnamon rolls.
Here is the recipe I always use, quick, easy, ready within less than an hour.
BREAD

Use 2 1/4 c. hot tap water
Add 2 packages of Yeast, or 2 T. yeast
Mix until yeast is dissolved. Add 2 T. Sugar (sometimes I use honey)
2 T. Oil (vegetable, olive, whatever kind you prefer)
1 t. salt
Mix till the above ingredients are dissolved into water .
6 cups flour
Slowly add flour, mixing as you add more. Mix until the dough starts to ball up (pulls together as a big ball) If too sticky, add more flour, small amounts at a time. Knead for about 10-15. Put in greased bowl, cover with wet cloth until doubles (about 30-60 minutes) Punch down, and use it as you wish, pizza, bread, braided bread, cinnamon rolls, fried bread). When making bread, put in bread pans and bake 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes.
Matthew, our 14 year old grandson, called last week for the recipe, made it and made pizza. When I asked how it turned out, he said "Great!!! We put bacon and cheese on some of it, and plain cheese on some"
All the kids can get in on baking, and you get time with them and it's an experience they will never forget!

Winter Cider is one of our great soaps. It is a fall soap, made with cinnamon and cloves essential oils. Our soap are great unique gifts!! Who doesn't use soap???? You can put them in a basket with finger tip towels, wash clothes, loofahs (OHH, well we make them too, in a loofah soap round), bath fizzies (oh my, we make them too) or just about any bath accessory you can think of!!!!

Kid Hat Project

Here is a project for the kids I found on the Crayola site:

Community Helper Hats
crayola supplies:
Crayons
Metallic FX Crayons
No-Run School Glue
Blunt-Tip Scissors
household supplies : paper plates
1. What community helpers do you admire? Firefighters, police officers, utility and construction workers, and mail carriers? Most community helpers wear hats. Where you live, what colors do they wear? Are there badges on their hats? These directions are for a firefighter hat. You can change them to make whatever hat you choose.
2. Cut most of the way around the inner circle of a paper plate with Crayola® Scissors. Cut the hole in a size to fit on your head. Fold the circle up for the front of your hat.
3. Cut out the center of another paper plate. Cut part of this circle in the shape of a front insignia or badge. The rest of the cut pieces could extend the brim and back.
4. Use Crayola Metallic FX Crayons to decorate insignias, badges, buckles, or other shiny parts of your hat. Color the rest of the hat with Crayola Crayons and your markers.
5. Glue the pieces together with Crayola School Glue. Let your hat air-dry and you’re ready to work!

No Lye, No Soap

The picture to the left is 3 bars on a soap dish, a gift pack, the right picture is the yummy mint chocolate!!!

They say, no lye, no soap!! You can only make soap with lye and some kind of fat. Actually any kind of fat. We have used hemp oil, safflower oil, olive oil, just any kind of fat!! You have to let the soap "cure". When it's cured you can eat it if you wish. Not advised, still tastes nasty, no matter what scent you put in it. Following is a how to make lye. I have to say, if I lived in the "olden days", older than what my kids think I did, I don't know if I could even could have survived!! You have to really admire those folks.
How to Make Lye

Lye, also known as NaOH, sodium hydroxide, or caustic soda, is used in making soap, and also in biodiesel fuel production. You could easily buy lye from a chemical supply house or online, but you may find great satisfaction in doing it all yourself, not to mention the money you will save.

Steps:
Start a rain barrel to catch soft water. This is a key step. Depending upon how much lye you want to leach, make sure that you have 2 or 3 gallons of soft water before you proceed.
Find a local brewer's supply house and pick up a wooden barrel and a cork about 3" long. You can use a cask-sized or waist-high barrel.
Take the barrel home and drill a hole in it approx. 2" above the bottom. Make sure that the cork will fit snugly into the hole.
Find a place that the barrel will be undisturbed. Lye is caustic. Take the necessary precautions. Put some bricks down and place the barrel on top of them. The brick base must be stable. It raises the barrel up so that you can easily drain off the lye into a container when it is ready. Give yourself room to work.
Cover the bottom of the barrel with some palm-sized clean rocks (e.g. river rock). Cover the rocks with approximately 6" of straw (this can be hay or grass). This will filter the ashes and help your lye drain cleanly.
Gather branches and/or logs of oak, ash, or fruitwoods. Remember that the best lye is made from hardwoods. Avoid pine, fir, and other evergreens.
Burn it outside in a pile, or better yet, use it in your fireplace or woodstove.
Scoop the ashes out and put them in the prepped barrel. (Make sure that the ash is completely cold, or you'll set your barrel and anything around it on fire.) You can fill the barrel with ash but it is not necessary you can make smaller amounts with less ash.
Put a pan under the hole and remove the cork. Pour the soft water in until you see it start to drain into the pan, then put the cork back in tight. The water level should be about 6" from the top. After a day, the first ash should settle and you can add more ash.
Let it sit for at least 3 days. You can add ash all week and drain it regularly on a specific day of the week.
Check to see if your lye is ready. For what purpose are you leaching this lye? Body soap or heavy cleaning? Lye concentration gets stronger with each leaching. For average soap making, you can use these measures: Drop a fist-sized potato or a raw egg into the barrel. If it floats enough for a quarter-size piece to rise above the water, it is ready. If it doesn't, you need to add more ashes or drain all the water and re-leach it (pour it back into the cask and let it set one more cycle).
Make sure that you have a wooden crock or glass container to catch your lye when it's ready. Put it under the tap, gently pull the cork, and fill your containers. Leave enough head room that they will be safe and easy to pour. Make sure that you have tight fitting lids.
Store your lye in a cool dark place until use. (The sooner the better.)

Tips
Do not start this project until you have collected 2-3 gallons of rain water and have purchased or scavenged all of your supplies.
Make sure that your lye barrel has a stable foundation and is in a secure place where it cannot be knocked over by, for example, roving children.
If you run a dehumidifier its collected water is an alternative to rainwater.
To dispose of old leached ashes, dig a hole away from everything and pour the muck into it. Don't cover it until the ashes dry thoroughly.
AND THIS IS WHY WE BUY OUR LYE!!!! lol WHAT AN ORDEAL!!!!

The cooler the weather gets, the more I've been baking. And just so Pauly won't eat them all, I've been passing them out to the kids. Here is a muffin recipe that is great. Been into muffins lately, yum!!
Banana Bread/Muffins
Ingredients
3 or 4 ripe bananas

1/3 C. melted butter

1 C. sugar Raisins and/or nuts (optional)

1 egg beaten

1 tsp. vanilla

1 tsp. cinnamon

1 tsp. baking soda

Pinch of salt

1 1/2 C. flour
Directions
In a large bowl, smash bananas. Mix all the ingredients in, adding the flour last. Mix together with a fork. Pour mixture into a greased 4x8 loaf pan (muffin pan will do as well). Cook at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until desired color.

How we got started!!

"It smelled like candy!??! Grrrrrr" "You're kidding, right? Soap????" "Oh well, it does smell good!!" (Emilee above, Jennifer, our daughter in bottom picture)

OUR ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY IS COMING!! WE STARTED MAKING SOAP OCTOBER 1. 2007

Just a little background about us....we started the soap business after a lot of research, hunting down the right oils, recipes, molds, goat milk, etc. It did take quite awhile to hunt down the lye. Since Indiana has passed laws about lye, it wasn't easy to find it, for one. Another, you had to practically promise them your first born just to get it. We finally got everything we needed......and lots that we didn't!!!

The first step was to finally make a batch:) Ahhhh, finally!! Not so! We had heard so many horror stories on how not to, how to, what to, when to about lye and soap, to tell the truth, we almost were ready to hang up the towel and quit even before we got started.

OK....let's do this!!! Dressed in our goggles, long shirts, long pants, rubber gloves, (the only thing missing was the tentacles coming out of our heads and we would have made pretty good Martians!!) WE STARTED!!!

Now we just love it!!! We truly hope you love it also!! If you have a scent you would like us to make, and we are able to find a quality scent, we will definitely make it. One suggestion we've received was for Sage/Citris. We are looking to add this scent soon. These soaps do not leave the dreaded scum in the shower/tub, and they leave your skin silky smooth!!

WARNING: We do state on each bar, NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION!! That's how good they smell. Emilee, my son Dan's three years old, said "Mmmmmmmmmm." "Honey, it's soap", says Nana. "Ewwwwww", says Emilee. "I told you it was SOAP, Emilee!!!" LOL

Play Dough
2 cups flour
1 cup water
1 cup salt
Mix flour and salt. Gradually add water, stirring until misture forms a ball. Knead on floured surface for 7 to 10 minutes. Seperate, add small amount of food coloring of your choice. This can be kept in air tight container and used over and over, or shap dough as desired or shaped and left to dry for 24 hours.

Moms, Dads, Values

Fifteen years ago today, my father passed away. At that time, he only had one great grandchild. That was my oldest child, Christina's son Cody. (The picture on the left is Chris and Grampa.)
Wow, today there are literally dozens!!
My mother and father taught me the values I still hold close today. There was not much money, but to us six kids, it didn't seem like it. We always had plenty to eat, rode our bikes all over the country side (well as far as our aching legs would take us and back) played card games, board games, and had a great time on the 3 acres we lived on. Mom and Dad always had a garden which fed our family of 8 all year long. They literally had a 2 acre garden. Boy, did I hate that! So much weeding in that hot sun. But, today, that is what I keep dear in my memories. I learned to can peaches, green beans, tomato sauce, whole tomotoes, freeze corn, cherries, peas, broccoli, and much more.
I use these experiences today, to fill my freezer and canning shelves.
Another thing we learned, was money pays the bills, it's not a cure all. You work to live, not live to work!!! It doesn't make you happy. Family, love and good values do!!! I tried to instill this in my children. Don't know if I did or not, but I sure did try!!
Everytime my husband and I start a new project, I wonder what Dad would think!!
Miss and love him and Mom terribly!

Essential Oils Properties, Apple Harvesting

It's apple picking time again!! Here is another daughter April and another of our sweeties, Billy. Looks like he's more interested in eating than picking (or pictures)!!
Here is a recipe for really good apple crisp. The topping can also be used on cherries, pears, or any fruit of your choice.

APPLE CRISP

1 cup water
1 (18.25 ounce) package white cake mix
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup butter, melted

Greenhouse for the Greenwood's!!

My honey has been wanting a greenhouse for years. I wasn't to thrilled about the idea, mainly because when I think of a greenhouse, I think of big panes of glass! Sounded dangerous, if a greenhouse sounds dangerous. LOL Well, he searched the net for ideas, plans, prices. Finally he came up with one that was made from pvc pipes, plastic sheeting and wood.....hmmmmmmm..........well that sounded do-able!! And it was! So instead of $500 for a kit, we were able to do one for less than $100. Well, the "we" part of that wasn't really true. It was all him! He got the plans online, got all the supplies, and made his greenhouse. He spends hours out there. Loves it!!
The only problem we've come across is getting the plants in early enough to be able to put in the garden to harvest early enough before the frost. Next spring, we will have to get the seeds in earlier. I believe this winter we will be coming up with an idea to heat it safely and economically.

Here is a recipe for lava cakes. Very easy, but people will think you are a gourmet cook!!!!!!

LAVA CAKE RECIPE!!!! Legend has it that this chocolate lava cake was the result of a major culinary disaster. The dessert was meant to be individual chocolate cakes, but a cook took them out of the ovens to soon, and the centers where still liquefied. Since there was no time to cook them further, the Chef simply introduced the dessert as chocolate “lava” cake! Makes 4 Chocolate Lava Cakes
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients:
5 tbsp butter
3.5 oz dark chocolate (this is one standard chocolate bar, I use chocolate chips)
2 extra large eggs
1 extra large egg yolk , I just use 3 eggs
3 tbsp sugar
3 tbsp flour
2 tsp cocoa powder
pinch of salt
powdered sugar as needed
Preparation:
Melt the butter and chocolate together over a double-boiler, or microwave for a short time. Stir to combine. Whisk together the eggs and sugar until the mixture is light yellow in color, and the sugar is dissolved. About 3 minutes. Stir the warm chocolate mixture into the egg mixture and whisk until combined. Sift in the flour, cocoa, and salt. Fold in with a spatula until combined. Spoon into 4 buttered 5-oz ramekins (I use the large muffin tins), and tap on the table to settle any air bubbles. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Place ramekins or tins in a baking dish and add water until it is halfway up the sides. Bake for 15 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm. The cakes can be turn out.

HEMP OIL SOAPS!!

We wrap our soaps with burlap (Burlap Babes) or the little gift box (top Left).
We've had a few people with skin problems begin using our soaps. The best of all for problem skin, is the hemp oil soaps. We combine the hemp oil, essential oils and the goat milk to make a great soap. Hemp oil is really good for eczema. The people that used it say, it gets worse before it gets better, but stick with it and it will help. Below, I've listed the properties of hemp oil.

HEMP OIL PROPERTIES

HEMP:Filled with essential nutrients, hemp seed oil is natures richest source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) which are known for their excellent emollient and lubricating properties.

MOISTURE:PUFAs increase the moisture retention of our skin, keeping it soft and supple and our hair healthy and strong.

PROTECTION:Trapping this moisture strengthens our skin and hair - enhancing our natural defences against pollution, sun, dry air and excessive use of soaps, gels and other detergents.

HEALING:The essential fatty acids contained in hemp seed oil have been clinically proven to alleviate or remedy dry skin, minor skin abrasions, acne, eczema and psoriasis.

ANTI-AGING:Hemp seed oil has a high content of Vitamin E compound, a natural anti-oxidant that traps excess free radicals which can injure, age degenerate and kill our cells and tissues. The oil itself can also compensate for the lower ceramide levels associated with ageing and metabolic slowdown. It is the lowering of these ceramide levels that contribute to the formation or wrinkles and overall skin aging.
Hemp oil soap is one of my favorites!! My most favorite scent is patchouli, added to the hemp oil!!!! By golly!!! Pure heaven!! But, to each his own.

Crafts Gone Bad!!

Here are two more of the sweeties, Julissa,8 and Breann, 7. Mom (my daughter, Jennifer) bought some floam. First rule to floam: If it needs mixed with a spoon, it is NOT any good anymore!!
Rule number two: Do not let the little darlings play with the defective floam in the house without any adults!!!!! LOL What a mess! Well, moral: Live and Learn!!

Here's what we've learned. Another pest, this time of year, are fleas!! We have Barney's Bubbles, animal soap. Although, it's marketed for animals (cats, dogs, horses, etc), it completely natural, no chemicals and can even be used on puppies and kittens, even people. The only problem we have had is: the dogs really, really like it!! I lost a bar and another half bar, because the dogs ate it!!! And again, no chemicals, no problem!!!

Here is a nice fall recipe:

OLD DUTCH CARAMEL CORN

1 (8 oz.) bag of "Old Dutch Puff Corn Curls"
Place corn curls in large roaster pan.
CARAMEL SAUCE:
In a 2 quart saucepan cook together for 2 minutes:
1/2 lb. butter1 c. brown sugar1/2 c. light corn syrup
Add 1 teaspoon baking soda to mixture. This will cause mixture to foam so 2 quart saucepan is necessary.
Pour caramel mixture over corn curls and stir until mixed. Place in 250 degree oven for 45 minutes. Stir at least every 10-15 minutes. Remove from oven and pour on wax paper. Break apart. This never fails!

Pumpkins and Bug Soap

Matthew, 14 and Alex, 8. Two more of our sweeties!!

This time of year is Pumpkin Roll time!!! Matthew called and asked Nana to make one, so Nana made two. I filled one with ice cream, the other with whipped cream. The following recipe calls for cream cheese filling. Any way you do it, it's really yummy!!!!
PUMPKIN ROLL
3 Eggs
1 cup Sugar
2/3 cup Pumpkin
1 teaspoon Lemon juice
3/4 cup All-purpose flour
1 teaspoon Baking powder
2 teaspoons Cinnamon
1 teaspoon Ginger
1/2 teaspoon Nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon Salt
.
Filling:
8 ounces Cream cheese -- softened
4 tablespoons Butter -- or margarine
1 cup Powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla
Preparation:
in large bowl, combine eggs and sugar, beating well. Add pumpkin and lemon juice, mixing until blended.
In separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, spices and salt. Add to egg mixture, mixing well. Spread batter into greased and waxed-paper lined 10-by-15-inch jelly-roll pan.
Bake at 350 ° for 15 minutes. Remove from oven. Cool for 15 minutes. Place cake on clean tea towel sprinkled liberally with powdered sugar. Cool 10 minutes longer. From 10- inch side, roll cake up in towel. Set aside.
While cake is cooling in towel, prepare filling. Beat together cream cheese and butter; stir in powdered sugar and vanilla and blend until smooth. Unroll cake. Evenly spread filling over cake. Roll up cake (without the towel). Wrap in plastic wrap. Cover and chill at least 1 hour. Slice before serving. Keep leftover slices refrigerated. This pumpkin roll freezes well.

This time of year brings the nasty mosquitoes too. The rain around the country has been outlandish, and now the mosquitoes are going wild. We also make, at Burlap Babes Goat Milk Soap, "Bye, Bye Bugz"One lady wrote to tell us she used it after those nasty black bugs that bite, bit her neck and she rubbed the BBB soap on her neck and it stopped itching. We have to say, the people that buy our soap, do come back for more!!!

Our Babies and their Interests!!

In my profile I stated I had five kids. I also have 3 step-children. Along with these 8 kids, are their kids!! To date we (my honey & I) have 8 kids and 21 grandkids!!! My husband is from New York. Oh, excuse me, BROOKLYN!! Those from Brooklyn think of themselves as from a different state. They have the New York accent, but when asked if from New York, they say NO, Brooklyn!!! Any other Brooklynites out there, give us a shout!!!!!
Tell us your interests (arts/crafts). Anyways, here is one of our grandchildren, Amanda (pictured above).
She has been in hip hop dancing for several years, and just started Middle School. Her mother just finished Nursing School and is a real live nurse!!! Congratulations Bonnie!!

Here is a quick, easy, good recipe for homemade noodles:
2 cups of flour
4 eggs
salt to taste
Put flour in a bowl, making a hole in the middle, room enough for the eggs. Mix well, kneading till smooth, adding little amounts of flour so it doesn't stick. Roll to thickness of noodles you want, make sure its floured well. When the thickness you want, cut into the size noodles you want. When we don't have any chicken or beef, we cook this in chicken or beef broth. Add to the boiling broth, stirring till all is seperate. Cook about 20 minutes or till doneness you prefer (I like al dente)
Tomorrow, check back for the floam from heck and animal soap!

Just a reminder: Soaps areon sale for 3 /$10!! Just order thru mom5miller@aol.com or burlapbabessoap@aol.com, you will be sent an invoice and pay thru paypal or check/moneyorder.

ROCKS, ROCKS, AND MORE ROCKS!

Another hobby/craft I love to do, along with making my Goat Milk Soap, is painting rocks and making them into animals. I've made owls, deer, raccoons, mice, rabbits, skunks, tigers and more. The grandkids like to get in on this too. They collect, wash and even paint the base coats on them.

The top photo is a finished rock, the other is how I start them. I pick a rock for the shape of the animal I want to paint, and either base coat it or use a sharpie to put on the basic shapes.
Then I paint in the details.

Wash that bug right out of your hair!!!

Believe or not, several people have come to me to find a lice "Cure". We found one, experimented, and it's very effective. Most people don't have this many essential oils just laying around, so I've been making up some "washes" for them. In a small jar, container, etc. mix:

3 tablespoons of Olive Oil

25 drops of Tea Tree EO

12 drops of Rosemary EO
15 drops of Lemon EO

15 drops of Lavender EO

massage this solution in hair, let it stay in for at least an hour!! The longer, the better, putting a shower cap over the hair. After treatment, wash hair with Dawn Dish Soap.

This removes the oils (and the bugs)

Then you have to go thru the hair, as with other treatments and remove nits.

I know this is not a subject anyone wants to discuss, but it's a real problem around this time of year, with school starting, day care, etc.

Oh yeah, when I made the lice treatment, the only bottles I could find to put it in was the bottle that all the little kids around here love to drink, "Bug Juice". I know, strange sense of humor, but I sure did get a chuckle out of it!!!

PINCHING A PENNY till LINCOLN'S EYES BULGE!!!!

In these times, there are so many people without work, including many from my immediate family. I've tried to teach my children to be frugal, only use credit cards when necessary, and to LEARN TO COOK AT HOME!!!! LOL I raised five kids on less than $20,000 a year. None of them starved, they ate well, and learned what home cooking was.

Here is a recipe I found for Bisquick, not what to make with it, but how to make it. This can always be used, from pancakes to biscuits, to fruit crisps and crepes.

Here is how to make your own mix:

9 cups all purpose flour

1 tablespoon salt

2 cups shortening (like crisco, etc.)

1/3 cup baking powder

1 teaspoon cream of tartar

1/4 cup sugar

Blend ingredients by sifting. Cut in shortening until the mix looks like corn mea. Mix can be stored in a covered container at room temperature.

Tomorrow, I will share a home remedy for getting rid of and killing lice. I know, touchy subject, but never the less, most people at one time or another come against these nasty little critters!!!!

Harvesting Herbs Today

Today, I went out in the garden to collect some Lemon Basil and also picked some fresh sage.
I am going to freeze dry these and put them in some new soaps. To date we don't have any that have these herbs in them. I will gladly take any suggestions on what to add to these scents.

We've been making soaps with the help of friends, family and customers। If you have a scent we don't have, we will gladly take any suggestions. This is how we came up with Cool Mint Nicholyptus. This soap was suggested by a young man in Memphis, TN. He then named it!! Can you guess his name?? LOL Thanks Nick!!!

It was a reminder of scents from his childhood at his Gramma and Grampa's. They had a patch of mint growing around a barn. Anyone who knows anything about mint, knows all you have to do is get a start and it's almost there forever!! You can pull it, till it, mow it............it just don't go away!

So this was the scent he wanted, along with eucalyptus. No one, so far, has been dissappointed with this combo.

Again, any suggestions, greatly appreciated।
